On Monday we posted an interview with George Bryson of Wild Poppy Juice. George was kind enough to send us a case of assorted Wild Poppy Juice products for us to try and review for all you lovely foodie readers!
Described as a "smashing fruit drink from the orchards of California", Wild Poppy Juice has a strong presence in the OC and LA counties but here in the Inland Empire, it's a little harder to find. I was able to find the Blood Orange Chili one at The Cheese Cave in the Claremont Village and after I tried it I knew this was something special. Organic, fresh and best chilled in the bottle, these juices are quite delectable!
Peach Vanilla: "Whoa." That was literally the first thing out of my mouth after I took my first sip of the Peach Vanilla. As a baker, vanilla extract is one of my best friends and just the aroma of the juice is like breathing in vanilla beans. The vanilla flavor isn't what you would think it would be, I thought it would be almost like a cream soda but it literally tastes like melted vanilla ice cream...but the really good kind where you can see the speckles of vanilla bean in it. The freshness of the vanilla is incredible I just really can't get over it. Definitely not over sweet, the fresh peach works in conjunction with the vanilla to create the perfect balance of flavors. I'd compare it almost like drinking peach cobbler ala mode.
Grapefruit Ginger: Pop the top and breath in. The first scent you're met with is freshly grated ginger. Not that pink stuff you find coupled with your fave sushi roll. This is the real deal. The pure rawness of the ginger prickles your nose with each breath you take in. The bitterness of the grapefruit hits you first then you feel the tingle of the spicy ginger that lingers long after each sip. This one literally prickles your tongue in a fun way. The best way to describe it would have to be that it tastes like a sweet/spicy/fresh ginger ale. I would say that this flavor is a little more of an acquired taste than the other ones. Because of the sharp nature of ginger and how much of it is in here, the Grapefruit Ginger is definitely for ginger lovers!
Blood Orange Chili: First of all, let me say that I'm a huge fan of blood oranges. This was the flavor that first introduced me to Wild Poppy Juices and it's still my absolute favorite. Blood oranges are SO hard to find, I usually have to feed my fix with the blood orange italian soda sold at Cost Plus. This flavor is definitely a bit of a brain teaser. Your first sip tastes like fresh squeezed blood orange juice made Dexter style, but before you know it, your tongue is tingling with the sting of a habenero chili. The spiciness is the surprise kick that lingers and keeps you coming back for more. To clarify you do get the spice of the chili but not the heat...get it? Perfectly sweet and spicy, this would make an excellent sidekick to some choice spirits (The company recommends pairing this with some tequila!). Think of it like a kick in the pants...but in your mouth!
Peppermint Lemonade: Upon opening the bottle I was pleasantly met with a minty aroma. You get the mint first then a burst of fresh lemon. The taste definitely is not as minty as it smells. I thought it would taste almost like candy canes but the mint takes the backseat to the fresh lemonade. This flavor surprisingly not sour or tart, it's almost like the coolness of the mint counteracts the signature tartness of a lemon. As with all the bottles we tried, the pulp is visible guaranteeing that each drink is made with freshest ingredients available. I loved how the cooling feeling lingered after each sip!

I'd go for the grapefruit ginger. I love ginger everything! Blood orange chili would be my next flavor - that just sounds like a cool combo.
